A Century of Excellence
In April 1911, a group of passionate golf enthusiasts acquired 107 acres from Colonel Douglas and the McClure Family, transforming the property into a vibrant golf haven.
The club officially opened its doors on May 30, 1911. Initially featuring a farmhouse renovated into a social center, over the years extensive renovations led to the creation of a striking Colonial and Spanish-style clubhouse, crafted from buff white brick.
Early challenges included transporting water up the hill from the Youghiogheny River — spring water was used in summer while ice was hauled daily by horse teams in winter. By July 1915, water tanks were installed near the river to support the greens year-round.
The golf course began with just four holes, later expanding to six, and finally to 18 holes by 1922. The back nine was designed by renowned Scottish architect Willie Park Jr., a two-time British Open champion. The completed 18-hole course was officially opened on July 4, 1922, with Taylor Alderdice, President of the National Tube Company, hitting the ceremonial first ball.
Membership fees started at $50 initiation and $25 annual dues, but were soon adjusted to match the club's growing prestige. W.A. Cornelius served as the club's first president, with J.E. Lauck as vice president.
Over the following decades, the clubhouse saw significant upgrades: a terrace dining area in 1952, a swimming pool in 1954, an underground irrigation system in 1958, and a mixed grill and lounge in 1960. The turn of the millennium brought further enhancements including the Grill Dining Room, a new heated swimming facility, and a state-of-the-art fitness center.
In 2007, a dedicated group of members acquired the club and has since overseen numerous improvements — updated cart paths, new carpeting, refreshed interiors, remodeled locker rooms, and a renovated Grand Ballroom. As we celebrate over 100 years of tradition, community, and enjoyment, Youghiogheny Country Club looks forward to many more decades of exceptional experiences and lifelong friendships.
